MELLEN BROWNSTONE CENTER AND PUBLIC SCHOOL INSTALL WEATHER STATION
The Mellen Brownstone Center and Mellen Public School have teamed up to offer live weather reports from their outdoor station located near the school. Mellen superintendent Rhonda Friemoth is excited about the potential of the new civic project.
“The Mellen Brownstone Center recently received a donation from a Mellen graduate to purchase a Tempest Weather Station. MBC Executive Director Jeff Peters contacted me to discuss a partnership in which the live weather reports would be incorporated into related curricular materials,” she said.
“The weather instruments provide a wonderful tool that will enhance the district’s earth science and geography classes and broaden current environmental studies. Working together with the volunteers at the Mellen Brownstone Center will provide an opportunity for relationship building between students and community members.”
Peters said, “The state-of-the-art Tempest Weather System provides current weather conditions, forecasts, windspeed, rainfall totals, and other fundamental weather data. We are pleased to offer this service to the community and visitors to the region alike.”
The former Mellen State Bank was built in 1902 using brownstone quarried in the nearby Apostle Islands and stood vacant for over five decades until it was purchased by Jacob and Meredith Sertich who donated the historic building this year to the nonprofit Mellen Brownstone Center, Inc.
Renovation work continues as funds are raised. Plans are to open in 2023. “This will be a place to learn about Mellen’s history, current events, the area’s natural landscapes … a combination of a civic and visitor center. This is just a charming brownstone that is certainly worth saving and renovating,” Peters said, who noted the weather information will be shared on social media.
“We will post the weather data on our current Facebook site, upcoming website, and the school’s website. We are also eager to work with the school staff and students on this unique project.”
Donations to the nonprofit are tax deductible and can be sent to the Mellen Brownstone Center, PO Box 446, Mellen, WI 54546.
